I will never forget Switzerland, the first country I visited in the continent of Europe, because the country's landscape, nature and scenery is really breathtaking! When my friend Norie invited me to visit her in Basel I did not hesitate to visit her. Having someone to host you in Switzerland is a big help because it is
an expensive country. Yes, expensive! The Swiss McDonalds' meal costs higher than the usual McDonald meals in other countries.

Who would have thought these are chocolates? |
Day 1 : I arrived in Zurich Airport (also known as Kloten Airport) where I was fetched by Norie. We had our dinner at a restaurant in the airport then headed to Basel via SBB train. From Basel SBB station, we went to her place in Basel via tram transport. Transportation system in Switzerland is very accessible. I bought a Swiss Travel Pass, an all-in-one ticket which I can use unlimited for one month to travel by rail or by road throughout Switzerland. I did not stay for one month but it was still practical that I purchased one. The next day, we started exploring Basel. We
walked at both sides of the Rhine river and it was truly amazing to see old castles, clean walkways and parks, and attractive European houses. Because it was Christmas season, Basel was very colorful and lively especially at night as many establishments were decorated with Christmas lights. I was also impressed that you can drink the water from the fountains in almost all public places. From the Rhine river, we went to Basler Munster, a cathedral with red sandstone walls and twin towers, and
is the main landmark in Basel.
Just near the cathedral was a Christmas bazaar where I bought some budget-friendly souvenirs. We also bought and tasted their uniquely-designed chocolates as well as their local sausage.
We also experienced a pleasant afternoon walk at Freie Strasse, the
shopping center of the city and had a glimpse of the city hall.
An afternoon walk at the Rhine river in Basel.
Basel is situated near the borders of France and Germany. We
also visited Dreiländereck, a bend in the Rhine river which
is the exact corner where the borders of the three countries of Switzerland, France and Germany meet. This corner is marked by a tower with the
flags of the three countries in it. This is not a popular tourist destination in Basel, but standing on the three-countries corner was really a wonderful
experience because it was like being in three places at one time.

At the three countries
corner. The corner where the borders of Switzerland, Germany and France meet.
We also explored the city of Zurich, Switzerland's biggest city. It was a pleasant experience walking the main downtown streets and crossing the love-lock bridge in this metropolis. Watching the sun set while cruising lake Zurich for one hour in that cold December afternoon was truly unforgettable.
I also had a chance to tour Bern. My walking
tour at Bern, the capital city of Switzerland made me appreciate the country more. Strolling the streets of the old city, a glance at the 13th
century clock tower, a glimpse of the Federal Palace and
overlooking the city of Bern at the Old Town hill was truly an amazing experience. The Philippine embassy is also located in this city and I did not forget to pass by.

I also met new friends, the Kissling couple, Rina and Claude who warmly welcomed me in their home in Basel.
It was truly one unforgettable vacation for me.
I fell in love with Switzerland! It is stunningly beautiful, and I fell in love with its breathtaking nature, the scenic view of its cities and the calmness and peacefulness of the entire country in general.
